Bill Clinton: Born With The Odds Stacked Against Him

I enjoyed reading Bill Clinton's My Life and occasionally still refer to a couple of passages in different sections of the biography. One of the reasons why I love biographical books and even movies is because we learn so much about this life and always come away with plenty that we can apply to our own lives.

Here is one of the most precious lessons (that is really a reminder because I come across it often enough) that I took away from reading Bill Clinton's "My Life". And that is the fact that anybody can rise from a disadvantaged beginning and early start in life that is far from being perfect to make something out of their lives.

This is a lesson that we can never hear enough of with all the complexities, complications and constant discouragement in this life.

Born of a widowed mother who struggled to raise him and later his half-brother, the man who was to later become the president of the United States never met his father.

It is really not surprising that this early part of the book has touched so many lives of people in all corners of the world who are able to instantly identify with the early struggles in Bill Clinton's childhood.

One of my favorite parts in this early section of the book is the part that talks about the two jobs that Bill Clinton's grandfather had and especially about his second job as a night watchman in a saw mill. Clinton explains the nostalgic reasons the old man loved working nights at the sawmill. It's vivid and brings tears to my eyes every time I read it. (Page 11 of the paperback version.)

Bill Clinton's grandfather had a major influence in shaping his life as we shall see later in the book, but this is the sort of inspirational account that tells you it does not matter what you are today or what you circumstances in life are. What really matters are the preparations you are making now for a better tomorrow.
